Trailer: Nicolas Winding Refn’s TV show for Amazon
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn is hard at work on his latest production: Too Old To Die Young, and we finally get to see some footage for it. The cast is led by Miles Teller, of Whiplash fame, who’s being supported by actors such as John Hawkes, Jena Malone, and William Baldwin. Refn started attracting buzz in the 90’s and early 2000’s with the Pusher crime trilogy, and made a big impact in the 2010’s with Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. Too Old To Die Young is a bit of a change for him, as it’s his first TV show.
It’s no surprise Amazon is footing the budget for this show, as the company has a strong reputation in auteur-driven productions at this point. See for example Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck or Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, recently featured in our neo noirs of 2018 overview. Details on the show are light at the moment, with the only thing we know being the fact that the show explores in the criminal underbelly of Los Angels.
We have to say the footage looks impressive, but Refn has never been one to falter in the visual department. We’re looking forward to spending some time in this neon-soaked hell of Los Angeles, but are also hoping it’s a return to form after faltering with the forgettable Neon Demon and the dull Only God Forgives.
On a different note, Miles Teller starring in this show makes it feel like an actor swap took place. Famously Miles Teller was promised the lead in La La Land, as the movie is directed by Damien Chazelle who had previously worked with Teller for Whiplash. Of course that didn’t happen, and we ended up seeing a version that starred Ryan Gosling. Gosling famously had starred in two of Refn’s earlier movies (Drive and Only God Forgives) but is nowhere to be seen this time around.
