Highlighting the shocking similarities between Sully vs Tully
When the movie Tully came out in theaters, a lot of potential moviegoers skipped it. Their reasoning had been: “we just saw this movie”. Since Tully had not in fact been re-released it seemed audiences actually confused it with the similarly titled Sully, which was released only two years before. Or at least that’s what many online publications said… We are of the opinion that perhaps movie fans were onto something, and Tully might in fact be a blatant copy of Sully. To back this up, we decided to highlight the similarities between the movies.
The similarities:
- Both movies star Oscar winners. Sully stars Tom Hanks, who won two Oscars for best actor. One in 1993 for Philadelphia, and one in 1994 for Forrest Gump. Tully on the other hand stars Charlize Theron, who won an Oscar in 2004 for her portrayal as American serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster.
- Both movies deal with the aftermath of a life-changing event. Sully is based on real life pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who saved the life of his passengers by landing a damaged plane on the Hudson River. Most of the movie deals with Sullenberger justifying his actions to investigators. Tully on the other hand tells the story of a woman who gives birth to a third child, and finds herself struggling to keep her life under control after.
- New York plays a key role in both movies. Not only are both movies set in the United States, they also both depend on scenes set in New York. In the case of Sully this is the crash on the Hudson River. For Tully it’s the scene where Theron’s Marlo decides to have a night out in Brooklyn with her nanny Tully, during which their relationship’s true nature reveals itself.
- The supporting cast takes a backseat to the main character. Despite both movies boasting an impressive cast of actors (Sully has Laura Linney, Aaron Eckhart, and Holt McCallany. Tully has MacKenzie Davis, Ron Livingston, and Mark Duplass) they are very much about their central characters’ journeys, and not ensemble pieces.
